Pray for Mauritania: Wednesday, May 30

Ramadan Week 3: In a sun-scorched land

Temperatures in parts of Mauritania have gone up to the mid to high 40s (104-118 F) since Ramadan started. Many Mauritanians who fast from food and drink in this weather cannot afford adequate nourishment for their evening “break-fast” meal. There is also social pressure for nursing mothers and pregnant women to participate in the fasting, even though it is not considered required by the religion.

Lord, have mercy on your dear ones who are ultimately seeking to find secure refuge in Your love. Strengthen their bodies and breathe life into their spirits. May they know that the fasting that you seek is the kind that looses the chains of the oppressed.

“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” Isaiah 58:11

Week 1 of Ramadan: Be still and know

During the month of fasting, life slows down during daylight hours.

Holy Spirit, encounter Mauritanians during their times of sitting, waiting and resting.

Show them that Jesus is the One will be exalted in the nations, and the One who long to be exalted in their hearts.

Break through apathy and stir up spiritual thirst that is greater than even the physical thirst of hot Ramadan days.

Pour out your Spirit

… till the Spirit is poured on us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest. The Lord’s justice will dwell in the desert, his righteousness live in the fertile field. The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.” Isaiah 32: 15-17 (NIV)

Lord, we continue to pray for a quickening of Kingdom transformation in Mauritania. In Your name, we speak a future of fertile fields, righteousness, peace, quietness and confidence over the land.

Holy Spirit, move in the hearts of Mauritanians. Reveal the kindness and the glory of Jesus. May this upcoming month of Ramadan be a time of revelation of what each heart is truly thirsting for.

I Am No Victim (Youtube)” – Sing/pray this song over Mauritania.

May Mauritanians flock to Jesus, and join this declaration of truth and freedom as Father encounters them with His unfailing goodness.

May the few who are following Christ in this land receive moment-by-moment encouragement as they live and serve as His beloved ones.

As we sing over this nation, we agree with God’s heart that victimhood, the orphan spirit, poverty, and any form of lack do not belong in Mauritania.

Justice and Freedom for All

Amnesty International recently reported on the “growing repression of human rights defenders who denounce disorientation and slavery” in Mauritania. (Full article)

“… we don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” —2 Chronicles 20:12

In the face of this endemic social issue, we ask for supernatural solutions.

Spend a minute or two listening to the Lord for His “precious thoughts” (Psalm 139:17 ) towards all Mauritanians.
Proclaim the truths from the Creator’s heart over this nation.

Pray for the roots of slavery and racial/social discrimination to be cut off once and for all in Mauritania,
Our eyes are on You, Lord – arise and act on behalf of the the enslaved and formerly-enslaved peoples of Mauritania. Show Yourself to be the mighty one who saves, demonstrate the strength of Your love

Believe Also In Me

We call out to Mauritanians - these are the words of Jesus to you, “do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” —John 14:1

God, soften Mauritanians’ hearts towards You, as only You can do.

  • May unbelief be destroyed, and may faith in Jesus arise in Mauritania.
  • May Mauritanians hear the voice of Jesus this week, and respond with belief.

Remove Obstacles

The robust looking “bushes” in this photo are actually weeds; a common sight growing in the sandy neighbourhoods of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania.

“And it shall be said, ‘build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people’s way.’ For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I will dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.’” Isaiah 57: 14-15

Pray for “weeds” – i.e., everything that obstructs the planting of gospel seeds – to be removed from Mauritania’s spiritual soil in Jesus’ name.

Pray for those who seek to plant seeds for the Kingdom of God to find good soil.

Praise God that His zeal and passion for Mauritania is greater than we could ever understand, and that He is the creator God who can cause a bountiful harvest to spring up in the driest of deserts.

See beyond the Messengers

Pray this passage over Mauritania – may Mauritanians come face to face with the face of Christ, through the ordinary lives of Messengers who are “filled up with light.”

“Remember, our Message is not about ourselves; we’re proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Master. All we are is messengers, errand runners from Jesus for you. It started when god said, ‘Light up the darkness!’ And our lives filled up with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ, all bright and beautiful. If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us.” 2 Corinthians 4:5-7 The Message

God of All Comfort

“Blessed be the God and Father our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Pray for Christ-followers who are sharing life with Mauritanians who are suffering, in despair, or grieving.

Praises be to our Father of mercies and God of all comfort.

May Christ-followers find grace and strength in their ability in Him to comfort those who are in every kind of affliction.

May the Lord’s grace be more and more fully known as His people share in his sufferings and comfort.

From doubt to faith

“Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” —John 20:26-29

Pray for Jesus to reveal himself to many Mauritanians.

  • For those who doubt, pray that Jesus himself will dispel all unbelief about who He is
  • Pray for faith to arise so that many Mauritanians will count among the blessed ones who will believe upon hearing the words of Jesus
