Algeria, North Africa

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty,
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust

Algerian Christians are asking us to pray Psalm 91 over them.

Algeria FlagPray for stability and hope for the young people; there are many struggles among them.

Pray for the many church Leaders who are weary and tired, they need wisdom on how to deal with many challenges.

Workers in Algeria report: “We are encouraged to see more growth and maturity among our team leaders. Pray that God will raise up the next field leaders and for more opportunities to move forward His Kingdom.”

Each week, atop the Atlas Mountains in northern Algeria, two widows in their 60’s are watching SAT-7 over satellite television. Their favourite programs are Free Souls and My Church in Algeria — both are filmed in Algeria and in the Berber language and aired with standard arabic subtitles.

God is using the Algerian Church (most them from a Muslim background) to reach out to Algeria and other Muslim nations. Pray for them!

The Algerian Church has recently taken steps to send people into Algeria and beyond, mainly to the Arabic-speaking world. Last year, they held on missions conference; they have planned more the year. Pray for the Algerian Church as the hear God’s hear on move forward into a world with intense persecution. Pray that their ministry will effectively reach the thousands of migrant Chinese workers in Algeria. Pray that the Lord will move the Chinese in the Chinese churches around the world to respond to God’s call to mission. Pray that some may come to serve Him alongside the Algerians.

I Always Thought I Knew God

A worker in Egypt shares about a friend:

B and her sisters, aunts and grandmother have had many spiritual conversations with her two Christian friends. She was touched by one friend’s salvation testimony and has seen dramatic answers when the friends prayed on her behalf. She has inner turmoil in reconciling these experiences with what she has always thought she knew about God.

When Muslims encounter the real and living Jesus, they frequently have to wrestle with what they thought they knew about God and Jesus as taught to them in Islam, compared to what they are hearing and experiencing through their Christian friends. Its quite different. It raises many questions and doubts.

How can we pray?

  • Pray for B, and many like her, who are now wrestling with their questions of faith.
  • Ask God to reveal Himself in all his glory, love and compassion.
  • Ask God to reveal the truth about who He really is.
  • Pray for demonstrations of His love and care for these seekers.
  • Pray for protection around them as they can be spiritually vulnerable.
  • Ask God to bring them into His Kingdom.

We do not fight against flesh and blood

Do not fight flesh and blood.

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
—Ephesians 6:12

Young people Our battle, our fight, is not against flesh and blood. There is a tremendous battle going on in the heavily realms over people that do not know the Lord Jesus Christ. There are spiritual forces that are battling. The Tunisian Muslims are not the enemy of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Tunisian Muslims are not our enemy. Satan (and his forces) is the enemy. Satan has blinded the minds of all unbelievers so they cannot see the Living God.

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.
—2 Corinthians 4:4

How can we pray?

  1. Pray for Christians in North Africa to see the spiritual battle raging over the lives of the North African Muslims. The people of North Africa are caught up behind the false religion of Islam. Pray for Islam to loose its grip on them.
  2. Pray that Christians in North Africa and around the world would increase the work in the battling in the heavenlies to see North Africans released and enter into His great Kingdom.
  3. Pray for North African Muslims to repent and turn to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Can I have a Bible?

A worker writes:

“The man in the photocopy shop we frequently go to glanced at the lyrics of the worship song I was photocopying and asked about how we worship God. On another occasion I was copying some pages about prayer and he talked about how Christians and Muslims pray differently. He wanted to know if we pray to the same God? Interesting discussions often happen at this photocopy shop! Last week I was chatting with him and he asked me for a Bible so I returned a few days later with one for him. I am praying that the next time I go in, we’ll be able to talk about what he has been reading.”

Another worker shared how she had started swimming at a pool recently and got talking to one of the women who works at the swimming centre. She is often rostered on to work there for long hours with few people to talk to. She was debating about various things in the Qur’an and the worker made some good points from the Qur’an which got the woman thinking about how she didn’t know the Bible as well as the worker knew the Qur’an. She asked for a copy to read since she has long hours with not a lot to do.

On the way to the swimming centre the following week with a Bible to give to the lady who works there, the worker got into an interesting conversation with the taxi driver who was genuinely listening and asking questions. So the Bible was given to him instead and the worker had to return the week after with a Bible for the lady at the swimming centre!!

  • Praise God that Moroccans are hungering to know the truth and eager to read God’s Word.
  • Pray that the man in the photocopy shop will read the Bible and quickly find it speaking directly into his life and circumstances. Praise God that His Word is living!
  • Pray for the lady at the swimming centre to diligently read the Bible she now has. Ask God to bring revelation of who He is through His Word.
  • Pray for the taxi driver who now has a Bible to read. Ask God to draw this man closer to Jesus.
  • Ask for more conversations between the workers and these interested Moroccans.

Following Jesus in Secret

In Egypt, as in all North African nations, there are many who follow Jesus in secret. For some, their family circumstances make it very difficult to openly declare they are Christians. Others do not know or realize that there are other Muslim-background Christians in their city to fellowship with. For many, being willing to pay the price of persecution for turning away from Islam to follow Christ is a very big step and may take time for the boldness to do so.

Here are two testimonies from Egypt:

Fatima is a great-grandmother who can recall a life spent in tents. Illiterate, she has heard the dramatized Bible on tape and seen mighty answers to Christians’ prayers for her family in Jesus’ name. She has asked how a Muslim can follow Jesus and confided that she knows other locals who share this faith. One of her sons and his wife appear to be secret believers and gladly receive Christian materials.

And:

Abdul is a secret believer who has gladly received many Christian materials on Christian faith and witnessing. A violent man in the past, his life dramatically changed after reading through the Bible. His wife and mother also are secret believers, but their extended family has a history of demonic influence; a brother has been an informer in the past. Abdul was given resources on inner healing, freedom from bondage and spiritual warfare.

How can we pray?

  1. Pray for the strengthening of faith of secret believers across Egypt today.
  2. Ask that the Lord will continue to grow their faith and boldness until one day they are willing to openly declare their love for Jesus.
  3. Ask God to soften and prepare the hearts of their family members through the witness of their changed lives.
  4. Pray that God will give them opportunities to share about Jesus with others, even in the quiet private conversations they have with others.

Powerful Testimonies from Algeria

Algeria archGod is amazing in His power and creativity in the ways He draws people to Himself.

Listen to these testimonies from Algeria:

An evangelist went around on the streets asking people if they had seen a glowing man in robes in visions or dreams. Many said no, so he told them, “If it happens, it will be Jesus. Come to me and we’ll talk about it.” Some however had seen Him in dreams, to whom he would explain the Gospel in detail and pray with.

Or:

A young man developed severe depression for two years. He had hardly slept for three months and his family tried everything: doctors, sorcerers, imams—all in vain. A Muslim neighbour told him, “I hear that, in a nearby town, there is a church where the pastor prays for people and they are healed. Why not try that?” He attended the service and then went forward for prayer. He left as a follower of Christ, and went home to sleep through the night from that point on. His family was amazed and asked what medicine he was taking, He replied that in fact he took none at all; he had gone to the Christians who prayed for him. His family said, “We all have different needs. Let us all go there and see what happens.” He had a truck, which he filled with people to take to church; nearly all of them trusted Christ that day. When we went to his home to record his testimony, the whole family came and said, “Everyone of us has a story and we want to tell them on TV.”

The faith of these believers is simple and therefore powerful. They believe the Word of God. One brother heard of a woman sorcerer who would use her power to destroy families, bring sickness, ruin businesses and other destructive results. Women seeking children, or families not wanting a child to marry a particular person will seek her help. It is a lucrative business. After praying and fasting, the brother went to see her in her home. The powers of darkness recognize the power of God’s light; as he entered her home, she screamed. He rebuked her in Jesus’ name and bound the evil spirit in her. She fell to the ground as he kept praying. When she awoke she confessed, “Jesus came to me in a dream five years ago but I rejected Him. Today is my day.” He explained the Gospel and she became a lover of Jesus. She immediately renounced her past, and many families have come to Christ through her witness.

How can we pray?

  • Thank God for the boldness of the evangelist who goes looking for people who have had dreams of Jesus. Ask God to continue to connect him with people who have had dreams so that he can explain the meaning of the dream and introduce people to Jesus.
  • Pray for the family who put their trust in Jesus because He met many of their needs and answered their prayers in powerful ways. Ask God to fill them with a hunger for His Word, that as a family they will read the Bible together and learn and grow in their faith quickly. Pray that as a family they will soon be the hub of a church fellowship.
  • Praise God that His power overrules the power of darkness. Praise God that the sorcerer had a power encounter with God’s great power and love. Ask God to fill her with faith to share her testimony with other sorcerers. Pray that she will become a powerful instrument for God’s saving grace for those who struggle with demonic oppression.
  • Ask God to surround the believers in Algeria with His presence. Ask God to teach them how to cover and protect themselves in the spiritual battle. Ask God for His mighty army of angels to defend His Church in Algeria when they face persecution and spiritual attack. May their faith grow in leaps and bounds as they grow more in knowledge and experience of His Word and Christian life.
